0. Second Eucharist: Resurrection Series

“When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:30-32

What we have here is this breaking of bread, the recognition of Jesus, burning hearts after the walk on the road to Emmaus. It was the third day after His death. The stakes were high.

The colors mimic early spring, subtly muted blooms. There is a path lit with gold foil symbolizing their walk to Emmaus. In the gospel it says the three of them went to a village because it was “toward evening and the day is now far spent” so I brushed in there the colors of an inky retiring sky. I wanted it to look like the painting was excavated from the ground, probably from the years of the early church.

Jesus is with us, on our path of life, in the words of scripture, and with us fully in the Eucharist. Jesus is with us, and He loves us.
